Business verification is step five of setting up the WhatsApp Business API, and the least interesting and most consequential step in getting WhatsApp working. Skip it and your number is stuck starting 250 conversations a day, which is not a channel, it is a demo.
Meta describes it plainly: "Business Verification is a process that allows us to gather information about you and your Business so we can verify your identity as a business entity." What it does not tell you is which of your documents will fail, or why.
What does Meta business verification actually unlock?
It moves your WhatsApp number off the starting messaging tier. A new number can begin conversations with 250 unique customers per rolling 24 hours, and verifying your business is one of the three documented routes past it, alongside having your provider verify you or delivering 2,000 messages to unique customers in 30 days with high quality templates.
Verification is the fastest of the three, because the other two require you to already be sending at a volume the 250 cap prevents. See how the messaging tiers work for what happens after.
How long does Meta business verification take?
Meta's own published range is very wide: a decision can arrive in about ten minutes or take up to fourteen business days. Most guides repeat "1 to 3 days".
In our experience it lands in 24 to 48 hours, provided every document is correct and consistent on the first submission. The variance people report is almost never Meta being slow. It is a resubmission cycle: a document is rejected, someone fixes one field, the clock restarts. Get it right once and it is quick.
What are the two steps?
They happen in different places, which is why people think they have finished when they have not.
- In the App Dashboard, go to Settings → Basic → Verification and click Start Verification. This connects your app to a business.
- In Business Manager, an Admin must complete the verification itself by clicking Start Business Verification.
Step one alone does nothing. If verification appears stalled with no reviewer activity, check that step two was actually completed by someone with Admin rights, not an Employee.
Which documents does Meta accept in India?
Meta's definitive list lives in the Business Manager Help Center and varies by country and entity type, so treat the following as what works in practice for Indian businesses rather than as the official enumeration.
To prove your legal business name, commonly accepted:
- Certificate of Incorporation
- GST registration certificate
- Shops and Establishment certificate
- MSME / Udyam registration
- Trust or NGO registration documents
- PAN card, in some cases
To prove your business address and phone number, commonly accepted:
- A utility bill (electricity, water)
- A bank statement
- Your business licence
- MSME / Udyog Aadhaar
If you are using the GST certificate, which is the most common route for Indian SMBs, the practical requirements are specific: the file should be PDF, JPG, JPEG or PNG, the GSTIN must be active and mapped to the legal name on the certificate, and the address on the certificate must match what you entered during verification.
Why do most verifications get rejected?
Because of a name mismatch, not a document problem.
The others, in rough order of frequency:
- The document is expired, or does not clearly display the business name.
- The address does not match what was typed into the verification form.
- The trade name is used instead of the legal name. Your brand is not your registered entity.
- A scan is unreadable, cropped, or a photo of a screen rather than a document.
The 48-hour checklist
Do all of this before you click submit, not after a rejection:
- Open your Business Manager settings and your document side by side. Make the business name character-identical, including the entity suffix and punctuation.
- Use the legal name, not the trade name, everywhere in the form.
- Check your GSTIN is active on the GST portal before you upload the certificate.
- Make the address identical too, in the same order and format as the document.
- Upload a clean scan or the original PDF. Not a photo, not a crop.
- Confirm an Admin completes step two in Business Manager, and that the same person can see the verification status.
- Submit once. Every resubmission restarts the clock, which is the whole reason people report two weeks.
Done that way it is a 48-hour step, and it is the difference between a WhatsApp number that can carry your lead volume and one that stops at 250.
At Kredoo we take clients through this as part of onboarding, because a business stuck at 250 conversations a day cannot use anything we build for them. If you would rather not do it yourself, that is part of what we set up.
Questions people ask
How long does Meta business verification take?
Meta's published range is wide, from around ten minutes to fourteen business days. In practice it completes in 24 to 48 hours when every document is correct and consistent on the first submission. Long timelines are almost always caused by resubmission cycles rather than by slow review, because each resubmission restarts the process.
What documents are needed for Meta business verification in India?
To prove the legal business name, commonly accepted documents include the Certificate of Incorporation, GST registration certificate, Shops and Establishment certificate, MSME or Udyam registration, and trust or NGO registration documents. To prove address and phone number, a utility bill, bank statement, business licence or Udyog Aadhaar is generally accepted. Meta's definitive list is in the Business Manager Help Center and varies by country and entity type.
Why was my Meta business verification rejected?
Most commonly because the business name on the submitted document does not exactly match the legal name in the Meta Business Manager account. Abbreviations such as Pvt Ltd instead of Private Limited count as a mismatch. Other frequent causes are an expired document, an address that does not match the verification form, using a trade name instead of the registered legal name, and an unreadable or cropped scan.
Can I verify my Meta business account with a GST certificate?
Yes, and it is the most common route for Indian SMBs. The certificate should be uploaded as a PDF, JPG, JPEG or PNG, the GSTIN must be active and mapped to the legal name shown on the certificate, and the address on the certificate must match the details entered during verification.
Do I need business verification to use the WhatsApp Business API?
You can start sending without it, but your number is limited to starting conversations with 250 unique customers per rolling 24 hours. Business verification is one of three documented routes past that limit, and the fastest, since the other two require sending volume that the 250 cap itself prevents.
Why is my Meta business verification stuck with no progress?
Usually because only the first of two steps was completed. Starting verification in the App Dashboard under Settings, Basic, Verification connects the app to a business, but an Admin must then complete the verification itself inside Business Manager. An Employee-level user cannot finish it.
